Rhythm Body and Soul Festival

If the rhythmic rumble of tap dance rolls across the prairies and sends tremors underfoot, it’s because the Rhythm Body and Soul Festival has kicked off in Calgary. From February 12 to 15, the fourth annual festival will host eight international tap artists, offer over forty master classes and workshops, present panel discussions and show historical film footage.

A concert opens the festival on Thursday night, featuring the Tri-Tone Rhythm Ensemble, international faculty and live jazz musicians, while Saturday night gives way to more tap performances and the tonal textures of a live jazz quartet at the Valentine’s Gala. And what tap festival would be complete without a white hat ceremony and birthday celebration for the legendary Gregory Hines?

The Rhythm Body and Soul Festival is produced by Tri-Tone Productions, which was founded in 2008 by Calgary tap artist Tasha Lawson. Tri-Tone Productions aims to both preserve historical works and develop new creations, while paying tribute to the Masters of Tap using the languages of rhythm tap, body percussion and contemporary/creative movement.
