PINA: A 3D Dance Tribute

By Julye Huggins

Another exciting dance film scheduled for Toronto International Dance Festival (TIFF) this month is Wim Wenders’ PINA, a 3D tribute to the late dance legend Pina Bausch. Running September 8th through 18th, PINA celebrates the life and work of Bausch, who passed away in 2009 a few days before shooting for the film was scheduled to begin. Although Wenders’ initially abandoned the project, the dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal (Bausch’s company) decided to continue on. The result is a stunning display of excerpts from her most famous choreography in and amongst the streets of Wuppertal, Germany, including her own version of The Rite of Spring, Café Mueller, Vollmond and Kontakthof, of which three versions were filmed, each with dancers of a different age.
