Ottawa GreekFest Flash Mob

Festivalgoers celebrate Greek culture by participating in a traditional folk dance, flash mob-style

Summer is officially here and that means packing in outdoor fun any moment us vitamin D-starved Canadians can get. From block parties to parades to music festivals, the options of where to venture in order to grab a tasty snack, listen to local tunes and dance in the street are seemingly endless. If having a good time is your cup of tea, then one event you won’t want to miss out on is GreekFest.

Sweeping from Halifax, NS, to Victoria, BC, Greek cultural festivals are a highlight of the festival season for anyone who enjoys baklava and breaking down to the lavouto. In this video capturing a flash mob at the Ottawa GreekFest in 2011, crowds of smiling individuals join in the traditional Zorba dance. Growing from a lone man grooving in the street to a whole block of moving bodies, the joyous event even sees plates being broken with traditional Greek flare. Learn the origin of this jubilant act and partake in language lessons, Byzantine church tours, dance lessons, kids activities and more at your local Greek Festival. Opa!
