By Julye Huggins

Earlier this month, May 9th through 13th, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) ended its 2011-2012 season with Pure Ballet: Fluid Motion Virtuosic Dance. The mixed program included the world premiere of The Doorway - Scenes from Leonard Cohen by choreographer Jorden Morris, the epic Carmina Burana by the prolific creator Mauricio Wainrot, and Luminous by RWB alumnus Peter Quanz.Quanz’s creative process for this work began at the National Choreographers Initiative. After first being staged by Hong Kong Ballet, the work is now brought to RWB. This video features dancers Sophia Lee, Alexander Gamayunov, Vanessa Lawson and Tristan Dobrowney. The summer is hot for the RWB and its school. The company’s Northern Tour takes them to northern Manitoba (May 25-27) and then a performance at Jacob’s Pillow (August 1-5). The company further supports Quanz’s own company Q Dance, which tours St. Louis (May 26), New York City (June 2-3) and Winnipeg (June 8-10). The RWB School’s professional division will be showcasing works locally at In Concert (May 16-19), On the Edge (May 31-June 1) and Ballet in the Park (July 25-27).
