ILL-Abilities: Mixed Ability Dance Crew

By Julye Huggins

Check out this recent video of the international breakdance crew ILabilities performing at an event in Ottawa. Founded in 2007 by Montréal’s Luca “Lazylegz” Patuelli, ILL-Abilities is comprised of b-boys who are perceived to have physical limitations, but strive to shatter these misconceptions of disability and show the world otherwise. Its members include Redouan “Redo” Ait Chitt (The Netherlands), Sergio “Checho” David Miranda Carvajal (Chile), Tommy “Tommyguns” Ly (United States) and Jacob “Kujo” Lyons (United States). According to their website, their mission is to “redefine society’s view of disability, promote empowerment, and encourage limitless possibilities through motivational entertainment.” Not wanting to be characterized by disability, they define “ill-ability” as “the opposite of disability: adaptation of power, strength, and creativity … Creating advantages from disadvantages”Check out the video below for ILL-Abilities’ latest promo piece. For more on mixed-ability dance in Canda, be sure to check out the February 2009 issue of The Dance Current.
