Cedar Lake: Violet Kid

By Julye Huggins

At the Vancouver Playhouse September 28th and 29th, DanceHouse presents the New York-based contemporary ballet company Cedar Lake. From their virtuosic and athletic repertoire, they offer an evening of works including Tuplet by Alexander Ekman, Grace Engine by Crystal Pite and Violet Kid by Hofesh Schecter. According to the presenter, the program is said to showcase “the company’s downtown edge and personality as featured in the film The Adjustment Bureau.”Of note, Shechter’s work is particularly dark, with a brooding score setting the tone of bottled rage. An oppressive weight stirs tension and a volatile energy that twitches and jerks, shuffles and scurries, pulsates and thrusts. In describing his vision of the work, and his inspiration of a child’s hushed urges and passions, Shechter notes: “We all want to shout, sing, run out in the rain. The tension between good and quiet, and free and noisy — that was the physical tension that I explored in Violet Kid.“Check out the video below for an intense rehearsal video of Violet Kid.
